Housing Initiative
Since The Stewpot’s founding, casework and volunteer managers at The Stewpot has participated in efforts to house – Interfaith Housing, Presbyterian Housing, and active participation in the Continuum of Care, as coordinated by the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance. Across the country, efforts to make supportive housing available to the chronically homeless with permanent, sustainable and environmentally forward housing are underway.
EVERgreen Family Residences, a joint venture of Family Gateway and The Stewpot of First Presbyterian Church located at 1701 Canton (one block from Dallas City Hall), will provide 130 units of permanent and short-term supportive housing for children of families in need of housing. The housing development will serve a total of 325 residents and will also provide enriched supportive services onsite and through existing service providers located in the area.
An existing 30-unit transitional housing facility operated by Family Gateway will be renovated to include 30 new short-term housing units, a school, day care, full-service cafeteria, Community dining office, technology and job training facilities. Additionally 100 new permanent affordable housing residences for families with children will be constructed. The Dallas Housing Authority will provide 100 project-based Section 8 vouchers to make this housing affordable based on a percentage of income of the residents. A mix of 1-, 2- 3 and 4 -bedroom units is planned based on the current profile of homeless families in Dallas.
